Dengue cases doubled; seven deaths reported in 2024
Summary: In the first quarter of 2024, Dengue cases doubled, accompanied by seven reported deaths.

In Singapore, there’s a big problem with Dengue fever. More people are getting sick with it compared to last year. In the first three months of this year, there were over 5,000 cases, which is a lot more than the 2,360 cases we had at the same time last year. Seven people have died from Dengue so far this year, which is more than the total number of deaths we had in the whole of last year, which was six.

Officials are very worried about this. They launched a campaign to try and stop more people from getting sick. Usually, cases go up a lot between May and October, so they’re trying to get people to be careful before that time.

One government person, Baey Yam Keng, talked about how many cases there are each week. He said there are more than 300 cases every week in the first three months of this year. That’s a lot of people getting sick.

Dengue

One reason why so many people are getting Dengue is because there are lots of mosquitoes that carry the Dengue virus. The number of places where these mosquitoes can lay eggs has gone up a lot since last year. This is dangerous for people’s health.

The government has marked 27 areas as “red” because there are a lot of cases there. “Red” means there are ten or more cases in that area. This shows that Dengue is a big problem in these places.

There are different types of the Dengue virus in Singapore. One type, called DENV-2, has been common since September last year. This is making it harder for people to stay healthy because our bodies don’t know how to fight off all the different types of Dengue virus.

The government is worried that if they don’t do enough to stop Dengue, there will be even more cases in the next few months. They say that if they don’t take action now, Dengue will continue to be a big problem.
