For over two decades, the Pilibhit constituency has been under the influence of either Varun Gandhi’s mother, Maneka Gandhi, or Varun himself. Varun first won the seat in the 2009 Lok Sabha Elections on behalf of the BJP. Following him, Maneka Gandhi assumed office in 2014 until Varun reclaimed the position in the 2019 polls. Pilibhit stands out as a prominent constituency in Uttar Pradesh, set for voting on April 19 in the initial phase. The nomination process commenced on Wednesday.

Will Varun Gandhi now contest as an Independent

Before the BJP released its fifth list, it was speculated whether Varun Gandhi would contest as an independent candidate if he was not given a ticket to contest from the Pilibhit constituency.

Some reports even suggested that Varun Gandhi would consider contesting the Lok Sabha polls either as an independent candidate or representing the Samajwadi Party (SP). However, the Akhilesh Yadav-led SP surprised many by announcing Bhagwat Sharan Gangwar as the party’s candidate from Pilibhit on March 20th.

Earlier in the same month, the news agency PTI reported that Varun Gandhi’s representatives procured four sets of nomination papers for the Pilibhit seat in Uttar Pradesh. The MP’s spokesperson, MR Malik, confirmed that on Gandhi’s instructions, he obtained four sets of nomination papers — two in Hindi and two in English.

It is worth noting that Varun Gandhi has expressed his dissent against the BJP on various matters, including critiques of the Agnipath scheme, employment policies, and healthcare initiatives. Despite his vocal criticism, he recently appeared alongside BJP leaders and praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi. News agency PTI reported these developments.
