Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasised the government’s dedication to restoring ancient structures to their former glory.
He underscored the significance of preserving traditional building techniques for the benefit of future generations, fostering an understanding and appreciation of historical heritage.On March 12, marking the anniversary of the historic Dandi Yatra, Prime Minister Narendra Modi unveiled the ₹1,200 crore Gandhi Ashram Memorial masterplan at Sabarmati in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. Additionally, he inaugurated the refurbished Kochrab Ashram during the same event.
During his address, PM Modi emphasised the importance of valuing our nation’s heritage. He also rebuked previous governments for their failure to protect our rich cultural legacy due to a lack of the necessary mindset and political determination.
“A nation that disregards its heritage imperils its future,” remarked Modi. “Bapu’s Sabarmati Ashram holds significance not only as a national treasure but as a global one.”
Transformation of the Sabarmati Ashram
Highlighting the metamorphosis of Mahatma Gandhi’s Sabarmati Ashram, the prime minister underscored how the once sprawling 120-acre estate has gradually shrunk to a mere 5 acres, with just 36 of the original 63 structures still standing. Emphasising the shared duty of all Indians, he urged the preservation of this internationally acclaimed landmark.
He emphasised the government’s dedication to restoring ancient structures to their original glory, with the goal of reducing the need for new buildings. He underscored the significance of preserving traditional building techniques to ensure future generations grasp and value the historical importance of the Sant of Sabarmati.
PM Modi praised the families living at Sabarmati Ashram for their contribution in helping the government acquire 55 acres of land for the redevelopment, a crucial milestone in expanding this iconic location.

Gandhi’s Ideals Inspire Policies
Emphasising Mahatma Gandhi’s concept of Gram Swaraj and a self-reliant India, PM Modi connected his administration’s initiatives like ‘Vocal for Local’ and ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ to Gandhi’s aspirations. He highlighted the triumph of natural farming in Gujarat, aligning with Gandhi’s vision and stressing the empowerment of women in economic endeavours.
Prime Minister Modi attributed the uplift of 25 crore individuals from poverty in the past decade to government policies. He voiced assurance in Mahatma Gandhi’s blessing upon these endeavours and highlighted the continuous national progress spanning diverse sectors, ranging from land to space.
