Role Of Dietitian
Dietitian: Dietitian is one who plans and supervises the preparation of therapeutic or other diets for individuals or groups in a hospital or institution or other establishments, give instruction in selection and proper preparation of food according to dietetic principles.
Diet counselling: To educate the patient regarding the nature of the disease, its hazards, the care and prevention, personal hygiene and the dietary modification.
Role of dietitian:
Responsibilities of a dietitian:
1. Planning a diet according to doctor’s prescription.
2. To prepare the patient mentally to accept the modified diets.
3. Diet should be appetizing and appealing.
4. To arrange patient follow up.
Identifying nutrition problems and assessing the nutritional status of patients in a clinical setting.
5. Developing diet plans and counselling patients on special diet modifications.
6. Assessing, promoting, protecting, and enhancing the health of the general public in a community setting and providing strategies for prevention of nutrition-related diseases.
7. Managing a cost effective food production operation, distributing high quality meals/snacks, and monitoring sanitation and safety standards in a food service setting.
8. Operating private consulting practices to provide expertise in nutrition, as well as promote health and prevent disease
9. Working with individuals, groups, workplaces and media to provide dietary advice for healthy living.
10. Working with food and pharmaceutical companies to provide research, develop products, educate consumers, and promote and market better food and nutritional products in a business setting.
11. Teaching nutrition, food chemistry, or food service administration to students in any health profession and at all levels of education.
Types of Dietitians:
-> Clinical Registered Dietitian: May work in a hospital or health agency.
-> Administration RD: Manages a food service or dietary department.
-> Public Health Nutritionist: Conducts child feeding programs, public health programs.
Many dietitians work in hospitals to see specific patients for the assessment of health.
