New Delhi: Union I&B minister Anurag Thakur on Monday said “terror incidents in Jammu & Kashmir decreased by 168%”, “conviction rate in terror financing cases rose to 94%”, and “left wing extremism incidents reduced by over 265%” since Modi government came to power in 2014.
Highlighting the government’s zero tolerance policy towards terrorism, the minister referred to the 2016 surgical strikes and the 2019 Balakot air strikes to say that decisive action had resulted in definitive results.
Citing the instance of the northeast, he pointed to different treaties signed by the government, including the Bodo Accord in 2020, Karbi Anglong Agreement in 2021 and Assam-Meghalaya Inter-State Boundary Agreement in 2022 as he asserted that a new era of peace had been ushered in the region under PM Modi’s leadership.
“Terror incidents in J&K have reduced by 168% under the Modi government. An era of peace has arrived in northeast regions and there is a 80% drop in insurgency violence, a dip of 89% in civilian deaths, and 6,000 militants have surrendered,” Thakur said.
Government action, he added, was not limited to a firm handling of terror activities, but also to rescuing every Indian life domestically and in foreign shores and extending a helping hand to needy neighbours. “India has also offered a helping hand to foreign citizens under distress. In 2016, under Operation Sankat Mochan, 155 people including two Nepalese citizens were brought back from South Sudan. 5,000 Indians were rescued from Nepal during Operation Maitree while 170 foreign nationals were also rescued from Nepal,” he said.
