BSF hero of Longewala dies; Modi, Shah pay rich tributes | India News – Times of India

NEW DELHI: PM Narendra Modi and other senior leaders including home minister Amit Shah and defence minister Rajnath Singh paid rich tributes to 1971 war hero Naik (Retd) Bhairon Singh, who passed away on Monday.
“Naik (Retd) Bhairon Singh Ji will be remembered for his service to our nation. He showed great courage at a crucial point in our nation’s history. Saddened by his passing away. My thoughts are with his family in this hour of sadness,” the PM tweeted.
Sharing a picture of his meeting with Singh during his trip to Jaisalmer last year, Shah said that the news of the demise of 1971 war hero Bhairon Singh Rathore is very sad. “Leading a small contingent of BSF along with the army at Longewala post, he made Bharat Mata proud by defeating the enemy with his valour. Every Indian will always be proud of his bravery,” the home minister said.
Shah recalled that he had met Rathore during his stay in Jaisalmer last year and found that the flame of love and patriotism in his heart for the motherland was truly unique. “His heroic saga will continue to inspire generations to come. May God give strength to his family members to bear this sorrow,” Shah added.
Defence minister Rajnath Singh said, “Naik (Retd.) Bhairon Singhji, was such a brave warrior of the 1971 war who showed amazing bravery in the battle of Longewala. I am deeply saddened by his death. My condolences to his bereaved family. Bhairon Singh ji’s contribution in the military history of India will remain indelible.”
Eighty-one-year-old Bhairon Singh Rathore, a BSF veteran of the 1971 India-Pakistan conflict, passed away on Monday at the AIIMS in Jodhpur.
His bravery during the Longewala battle was immortalised in the Hindi blockbuster “Border”. Actor Suniel Shetty, who essayed Bhairon Singh Rathore’s bravery in the 1997 movie ‘Border’, paid tributes on Twitter. “Rest in power Naik Bhairon Singh Ji. Heartfelt condolences to the family,” he tweeted.
