New Delhi: Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma had a productive meeting on Wednesday with renowned industrialist Ratan Tata. During their interaction, the Chief Minister expressed his gratitude towards Mr. Tata for the monumental investment of ₹27,000 crore in setting up a state-of-the-art semiconductor plant in Assam. The upcoming plant is poised to not only boost the state’s economy but also create numerous job opportunities for the local populace, marking a significant milestone in the region’s industrial growth.

The Tata semiconductor facility located in Morigaon’s Jagiroad is poised to make a significant impact by establishing a prominent presence on the global semiconductor map. This strategic move is anticipated to bring about a transformation in the economic landscape of East India. Mr. Sarma expressed his optimism during a meeting held in Mumbai with Mr. Tata and Tata Sons chairman N. Chandrasekaran, highlighting the potential for substantial growth and development in the region.

“On behalf of the people of Assam, I conveyed our heartfelt gratitude to Shri Ratan Tata and Shri N Chandrasekharan for displaying remarkable conviction and faith in our State to execute this mega game-changing investment. This significant endeavor is poised to bring about transformative changes in our region’s economic landscape. We eagerly anticipate the fruition of this collaboration, with the first chips expected to roll out by 2025,” Mr. Sarma expressed during the interaction on X, where he shared pictures alongside Mr. Tata and Mr. Chandrasekaran to commemorate this milestone.

During the productive meeting, Mr. Sarma elaborated on the plans to establish a Skill Development Centre within the premises of the semiconductor facility located in Morigaon’s Jagiroad. He emphasized the Center’s aim to empower young individuals from the Northeast region by providing specialized courses in cutting-edge fields such as Artificial Intelligence, semiconductors, and electronics.

The initiative is designed to equip them with the skills needed to secure employment opportunities within the Jagiroad unit, contributing to their professional growth and the region’s economic development.

A cohort of 1,500 passionate young individuals, predominantly women hailing from Assam, are actively engaged in specialized training programs at various Tata facilities situated near Bangalore. This carefully planned initiative is designed to equip them with crucial skills and knowledge, thereby readying them for key leadership roles within the organization. The objective is to groom them for pivotal responsibilities once the semiconductor facility commences operations in the year 2025,” he elaborated.

Last week, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Outsourced Semiconductor Assembly and Test (OSAT) facility in Morigaon, a significant step towards boosting India’s semiconductor industry. Tata Electronics Private Limited is spearheading the establishment of this cutting-edge facility under the Modified Scheme for Semiconductor Assembly, Testing, Marking, and Packaging (ATMP), showcasing a strategic move to enhance the country’s technological capabilities and economic growth.

In response to the tweet, Sarma expressed gratitude to Shri @RNTata2000 for his valuable insights, generous hospitality, and most importantly, his confidence in #ViksitAssam. He mentioned that during discussions with the Tata leadership, they mutually decided to establish a skill development center within the Jagiroad semiconductor facility premises.
